Kangra, June 9

Twenty-five houses were damaged in Kangra district following recent earthquake tremors, with authorities estimating losses of more than ₹4 lakh. Officials said both temporary (kutcha) and permanent (pucca) structures were affected, prompting the administration to assess the damage and strengthen disaster preparedness measures.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADM) Kangra, Shilpi Bekta, said the earthquake on May 5 caused damage to five permanent houses and 20 temporary houses in the Shahpur area. The total financial loss has been estimated at over ₹4 lakh.

According to the administration, Shahpur subdivision recorded the most serious damage, with three permanent and three temporary houses affected. In Darini sub-tehsil, two permanent houses and 17 temporary houses sustained partial damage due to the tremors.

Bekta said the district administration remains fully prepared to tackle emergencies arising from earthquakes and other natural disasters. As part of preparedness efforts, the Himachal Pradesh government will conduct a statewide Mega Mock Drill on June 15.

The exercise will simulate disaster scenarios such as earthquakes and landslides to test emergency response mechanisms and coordination among various departments. Officials said the drill aims to enhance readiness and ensure swift action in the event of a future natural calamity.
